Central America
Central America is a region located between North America and South America, bordered by Mexico to the north and Colombia to the south. It consists of seven countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The region is known for its tropical climate, stunning beaches, and rich cultural heritage.
Road network
The road network in Central America varies from country to country, but overall, it is not as developed as in other parts of the world. The total length of the road network in Central America is approximately 50,000 kilometers, of which only about 20% is paved. However, there has been significant investment in recent years to improve road infrastructure, including the construction of new highways and bridges.
One of the major highways in the region is the Pan-American Highway, which runs from Alaska to the southern tip of South America. In Central America, the highway stretches from Guatemala to Panama, and is an important route for trade and transportation. There are also several other highways that connect the different countries in the region, such as the Inter-American Highway, which runs from Mexico to Panama.
Expressways are rare in Central America, and most highways are two-lane roads with limited passing opportunities. However, some improvements have been made to certain sections of the highways to provide safer and smoother travel, such as the construction of bypasses around congested areas. In some urban areas, there are also ring roads and beltways to help alleviate traffic.
Off the main highways, many roads in Central America are unpaved, gravel or dirt tracks that require four-wheel drive vehicles. These roads are often used by farmers and rural communities to transport goods and services, and can be challenging to navigate during the rainy season when they become muddy and slippery.
Overall, while the road network in Central America may not be as extensive or advanced as in other parts of the world, there have been significant improvements in recent years, and efforts are being made to continue to develop and expand the infrastructure to support economic growth and improve transportation for the region’s residents and visitors alike.
